Canadian guide to passport and document covers
Checklists for Buying, Packing and Caring for Covers
These compact checklists turn the guide's advice into questions you can run through before buying, before a trip and when your cover starts showing wear.

Use these as a quick screen of any holder you are considering.
- Does it fit every document?
Test the passport, a card and any paper you carry with it. Edges should sit flat without bulging, and nothing should need force to slide in or out.
- Is the closure dependable?
Check whether a snap, zip or elastic stays shut when the bag is full yet opens easily with cold hands or while you are holding a boarding pass.
- What is the security wording based on?
If a maker mentions blocking, see whether it explains the claim. Absent detail, treat it as marketing language rather than a verified feature.
Packing and upkeep reminders
Small habits extend the life of both cover and document.
- Before leaving home
Place the cover where you can reach it without emptying your bag. Keep it away from liquids, sharp objects and heavy items that could bend the passport.
- After a trip
Remove documents, let the cover air out, and wipe it according to its material. Avoid soaking it or using strong cleaners near the document.
